Biography: Barry taught for Edmonton Public Schools for 40 years before retiring at the end of the 2013 school year (14 years in junior high math and science, and 26 years in high school general science and physics). In addition, he was on the steering committee of the Edmonton Science Olympics for most of those years. He believes that students get most out of a classroom that is activity based and hands-on. His science classes always had a strong lab component and his math classes had a strong problem solving component. Used properly, these hands-on activities foster higher level thinking, cover the skills and attitudes parts of the curricula, and increase student engagement.
